Is your site covered by the accessibility obligation?
Since 28 June 2025, digital accessibility no longer concerns only the public sector. Part of the private sector is now covered, with penalties attached.

Who exactly is covered
In France, the European Accessibility Act applies to companies providing certain services to the general public: online retail, banking, transport, telecommunications, digital books and media.
Only micro-enterprises are exempt: fewer than 10 employees, and annual turnover or a balance sheet total not exceeding 2 million euros. Being exempt does not make your site accessible, and some of your customers still cannot use it.
What you risk
A non-compliant service is exposed to a formal notice, then to financial penalties, which can come with a daily fine until it complies. Enforcement falls to the DGCCRF or Arcom, depending on the service.
Companies with more than 250 million euros in turnover are also covered by article 47 of the French law of 11 February 2005: up to 50,000 euros per non-compliant service, renewable every six months.

Fixes, in order of impact. We start with what actually prevents someone from using the site: keyboard navigation, contrast, text alternatives, forms. The rest follows.
The accessibility statement. Mandatory, public, and it must be accurate. A statement overstating your compliance is an offence in itself.

Is my site covered?
Yes if you provide one of these services to the general public and you are not a micro-enterprise: 10 employees or more, or turnover and balance sheet total both above 2 million euros.
How long does compliance take?
The audit takes one to two weeks. Fixes depend on the starting point: a few days for a well built recent site, several weeks for an older one.
Does accessibility ruin the design?
No. The constraints cover contrast, navigation and structure, not aesthetics. An accessible site is usually more readable for everyone.
