Is your site covered by the accessibility obligation?
Since 28 June 2025, digital accessibility no longer concerns only the public sector. Part of the private sector is now covered, with penalties attached.
Who exactly is covered
In France the European Accessibility Act applies to companies with more than 10 employees and more than 2 million euros in turnover providing a service to the general public: online retail, banking, transport, telecommunications, digital books and media.
Below either threshold the obligation does not target you. That does not make your site accessible, and some of your customers still cannot use it.
What you risk
Penalties can reach 50,000 euros per non-compliant service after formal notice, renewable every six months. They stack per channel: the same service failing on the website, the mobile app and a kiosk can be penalised three times.
A missing or inaccurate accessibility statement is a separate offence, up to 25,000 euros per year. Enforcement falls mainly to the DGCCRF for the private sector.

If you exceed both 10 employees and 2 million euros in turnover, and you sell or provide a service to the general public, yes. Below either threshold, no.
How long does compliance take?
The audit takes one to two weeks. Fixes depend on the starting point: a few days for a well built recent site, several weeks for an older one.
Does accessibility ruin the design?
No. The constraints cover contrast, navigation and structure, not aesthetics. An accessible site is usually more readable for everyone.
